The mission of the Association is to promote increased public support of the St. Louis County Police Department; and educate the public about the function and role of the Citizens Police Academy.
The Citizens Police Academy ideal was born in England in 1977. Known at that time as the "Police Night School" within the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, its purpose was to provide responsible citizens with a comprehensive knowledge of police operations, practices, and objectives.
The first St. Louis County Citizens Police Academy was formed in May 1992. Ten years later the Alumni Association was formed by Colonel Ronald A. Battelle, Former Chief of St. Louis County Police.
November 12, 2002, was the first organizational meeting, and on February 24, 2003, the first officers and board members were elected and the Alumni Association was born.
Membership is open to all graduates of the Citizens Police Academy.
The role of the police has always been of interest to the average citizen. Millions of Americans watch shows such as “Cops,” “Alaska State Troopers,” and “Live PD.” Each week, real police action is broadcast into their homes. A Citizens Police Academy allows citizens to learn more about how their community police department works and about the many areas of law enforcement. It also allows police the opportunity to receive input from the citizens as well as their assistance and support. This two-way interaction is the basis of community-based policing.
Officers and supervisors give presentations on Patrol Procedures, Crime Scene Processing, Tactical Operations (SWAT, K-9 unit, and air support), Computer Crime, Fraud, Domestic and Child Abuse, Homicide, and much more.
Participants most often have the opportunity to tour the Emergency Operations Center, the Police Academy, the Firing Range, and other locations. They also get to ride with a Patrol Officer during his or her tour of duty.
The average academy lasts 8-9 weeks. Classes are approximately two hours per evening, once a week. Field trips might be scheduled on a different day or night, depending on the availability of staff. At the conclusion of the training, each participant receives a certificate of completion during a graduation ceremony.
If you are interested in continuing your support of the St. Louis County Police, you can join the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA). There are four chapters in the county: North, Central, South, and West.
We are the South chapter, and we support the Affton Southwest (3rd) and South County (4th) precincts. Our dues are $15 per year, and there are quarterly meetings, held at Grace Union Church, 3900 Union Road, St. Louis, MO 63125. At each meeting, we hear updates from the two Captains regarding their respective precincts and have a presentation from one of the divisions of the department. In addition, we honor one officer from each precinct as Officer of the Quarter. We have an annual Awards Banquet each March to name the two Officers of the Year.
Our members enjoy helping at various events where the police need some assistance. Examples are:
Volunteering is a fun way to give back to the community and show support for our St. Louis County Police.
